About The USMC
=========
The United States Marine Corps (USMC) is a highly versatile and elite branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, renowned for its expeditionary and amphibious warfare capabilities. While it operates under the Department of the Navy, it maintains its own distinct command structure and combined armed forces, including infantry, artillery, aviation, and special operations units. Its primary mission involves projecting power from the sea and responding rapidly to crises around the world. The Marine Corps' motto, "Semper Fidelis," means "Always Faithful."
The birth of the Marine Corps is officially celebrated on November 10, 1775. On this date, the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, passed a resolution to raise two battalions of Marines. These "Continental Marines" were intended to serve as landing forces for the newly formed Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War.
Although the Continental Marines were disbanded after the Revolutionary War in 1783, the need for such a force became apparent again. Thus, the United States Marine Corps was formally re-established on July 11, 1798, when President John Adams signed an Act of Congress. Despite this later re-establishment, the Corps proudly commemorates its original founding date of November 10, 1775, with traditional celebrations like the annual Marine Corps Birthday Ball.

About The MCL
=========
“Once a Marine, always a Marine” is familiar to us all. It is that feeling you get when you see a Marine Corps sticker on a car or a home proudly displaying the Marine Corps flag. All we need to do is knock, and that Marine will be there for you. It is not just a tag line for a commercial. That flag is the embodiment of our soul. Despite our many years of service to different causes and at various times, we all have that one tangible thing in common: It is the knowledge that we have all earned the privilege to wear the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor; a symbol that will forever be seared into our hearts.

About The Ball
=========
The United States Marine Corps celebrates with an annual ball primarily to honor its rich history, traditions, and the enduring spirit of the Corps. It's a deeply meaningful event that serves several key purposes:
- Commemorating the Founding: The ball is held annually on or around November 10th, the date in 1775 when the Continental Congress established the Continental Marines. It's a way to remember and celebrate the very birth of the Corps.
- Reinforcing Identity and Tradition: The Marine Corps prides itself on its strong sense of identity, brotherhood, and a deep respect for its legacy. The ball, with its formal ceremonies and traditions, reinforces these core values. It's a reminder of who they are and what they represent.
- Fostering Camaraderie and Esprit de Corps: The ball brings Marines of all ranks, from the newest recruit to the most seasoned veteran, together in a shared celebration. It's a chance to build and strengthen the bonds of camaraderie that are so vital to the Marine Corps. For many, it's a "second birthday" and a time to reminisce and connect with fellow Marines.
- Passing on Knowledge and Experience: A central part of the ball is the cake-cutting ceremony. The first piece of cake is given to the guest of honor, the second to the oldest Marine present, and the third to the youngest Marine. The oldest Marine then symbolically passes the cake to the youngest, representing the passing of experience, knowledge, and traditions from one generation to the next.
- Acknowledging Sacrifice and Service: The ball is an opportunity to recognize and honor those who have served, both past and present. It's a time to reflect on the sacrifices made and the accomplishments achieved by Marines throughout history.
- Formalizing a Celebration: While informal celebrations existed earlier, Major General Commandant John A. Lejeune formalized the annual birthday celebration in 1921. He issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921, which directed that the history, mission, and traditions of the Corps be read to all Marines each year on November 10th. This order helped solidify the importance of the date and led to the widespread adoption of formal celebrations, including balls. In 1952, Commandant General Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr. further formalized the cake-cutting ceremony and other observances, cementing the traditions we see today.
In essence, the Marine Corps Birthday Ball is more than just a party; it's a solemn yet joyous affirmation of the Corps' enduring legacy, its values, and the unbreakable bond among its members.
